Writer’s blog
This will detail my things of interest that came to light during my writing.
Running for Green
Recently converted the first three chapters from Running for Green, a teenage science fiction novel about a girl in a survivor’s city far beneath the surface of a war desperate to join the conflict above as a runner in order to find her mother who went missing the day humanity “went below”.
When you convert a novel into a script, what’s important? Certainly not the visuals and the cool descriptions you laboured over but the core, the emotional essence of a story. In this case, RFG (Running for Green) has become a five page conversation between classmates on a train; simple set, simple casting, and minimal CGI / Green-screen rather than the heavy visuals of a direct novel to script translation.
Capturing the essence of characters has always been a challenge within the sparse pages of a script, yet remains one of my greatest joys. It’s more of a challenge than people think.
But this time I don’t face the challenge alone because I have my sometime editor / co-writer Alan to assist. Let’s see what he makes of it…
